PROGRAM STRUCTURE

Curriculum, stage by stage

Workshop Schedule

  • Day 1: How Models Learn

Training vs inference, loss functions, bias-variance tradeoff, feature engineering basics, live demo with a regression model on real estate data.

  • Day 2: Language Models and Text AI

Tokenization, embeddings, how LLMs generate text, prompt sensitivity, evaluation of outputs, practical limits of current systems.

  • Day 3: Team Project Sprint

Teams of 2 to 3 choose from 5 scoped problem briefs. Facilitators rotate between groups. Prototype must be functional by end of day.

  • Day 4: Presentations and Critique

Each team presents for 15 minutes followed by 10 minutes of structured critique. Closing session covers the 12-point AI deployment checklist.

Tools Used

  • Python with scikit-learn and pandas
  • Jupyter notebooks provided pre-configured
  • API access to 2 commercial language model providers
  • No local GPU required

Full program description

This workshop grew out of a frustration: most AI training either goes too shallow or assumes you are becoming a researcher. This one assumes you are a professional who needs to make decisions involving AI within the next 6 months.

The format

Four days, roughly 6 hours each. Sessions run in the morning with structured lab time in the afternoon. Groups are capped at 14 participants so that each person gets direct time with the facilitator. Every exercise uses real or realistic datasets, not toy examples built to make algorithms look clean.

Day 1 covers how machine learning models are actually trained and where they tend to break. Day 2 focuses on natural language processing tools, including how large language models work at a mechanical level, what their failure modes are, and how to evaluate outputs critically rather than just accept them. Day 3 is entirely project-based: small teams of 2 or 3 work on a scoped problem and present findings on Day 4.

What participants leave with

A working prototype built during the workshop, a structured framework for evaluating AI tools in professional contexts, and a reference document covering the 12 most common mistakes organizations make when deploying AI systems. The document is written by the facilitators, not assembled from generic sources.

Participant Tomas Vedral noted: I came in skeptical about whether 4 days could change anything. It did not make me an expert, but it gave me enough to stop being fooled by vendor claims.

Results depend heavily on your engagement during lab sessions. Participants who treat afternoon exercises as optional consistently get less from the experience.
